Next week the Yale-NUS Center for Teaching and Learning is hosting Lucas Swineford, Yale University Director for Digital Education, who is visiting Yale-NUS College from March 21-24. Lucas is looking forward to talking with Yale-NUS faculty and staff about ways in which technology can enhance teaching, and make teaching more visible. Please email the CTL if you would like to meet with Lucas while he is here, and we can set up a meeting.  Lucas will be presenting at talk entitled, “The Digital Education Landscape” on Thursday, 23 March. Details are below.

On Wednesday 22 March, The Yale-NUS Center for Teaching and Learning will have a lunch discussion discussion about “Teaching Portfolios” with Joanne Roberts, Associate Dean for Faculty Development, and with Bryan Penprase, Director of the CTL. The discussion will review the procedures for creating a Yale-NUS Teaching Dossier, and will provide suggestions for creating an effective teaching portfolio that provides strong evidence for your philosophy and development as a teacher. Lucas Swineford will join in the discussion, and a template will be provided for helping you develop your own teaching portfolio – which can document your development as a teacher and provide evidence for student learning.

The descriptions and abstracts for both events are below:

The Digital Education Landscape – Presentation by Lucas Swineford, Executive Director of Digital Education at the Yale Center for Teaching and Learning Yale University, 23 March 2017 (Thursday) , 5PM – 6PM, at Saga Lecture Theatre 1.
Abstract: The term “online education” had been used for many years to describe a distant learning activity delivered over the internet. In 2017, Digital Education encompasses a wide spectrum of teaching and learning activities. From massive, open, online courses (MOOCs) to technology-enhanced residential courses to blended degree programs, Yale University is engaged in activities throughout this exciting environment. Lucas Swineford, the Executive Director for Digital Education at the Yale University Center for Teaching and Learning will discuss the University’s Digital Education strategy by sharing examples of their current activities. Teaching Portfolios – Presentation by Joanne Roberts Associate Dean of Faculty Development and Bryan Penprase, Director of the CTL, Wednesday March 22nd, 11:30-1:00PM, EC Program Room 1.
Abstract:  In this workshop, we will discuss the Yale-NUS College guidelines for creating a Teaching Dossier, and then offer a workshop on how to prepare your teaching portfolio. The goal will be to share many of the “best practices” of teaching portfolios, and some examples of how teaching portfolios can create a portrait of your teaching practice and your development as a teacher. With a template (circulated during the workshop) you can start building a portfolio of evidence that allows you to document your philosophy and influences in teaching, and to provide evidence for how you assess student learning in your classroom. Held in Program Room 1 in the Library. Lunch will be served at 11:30am and we’ll get started.
