Seminar Engagement Techniques – In and Beyond the Common Curriculum
5 August 2021 (Thu)
, 11:30 AM - 1 PM
The CTL and Director of the Common Curriculum are co-hosting a gathering for faculty who are new to Yale-NUS and new to the Common Curriculum. As the title suggests, the focus will be on seminar pedagogy techniques, with a particular emphasis on strategies for engaging and motivating students in Common Curriculum courses. We will bring together veteran and expert Common Curriculum leaders to share their perspectives and practices for:
Leveraging small, seminar-based classes.
Helping first years transition to our immersive liberal arts and sciences model.
Teaching a bimodal distribution – some students with extensive experience in the relevant subject and others with little to no familiarity.
Teaching students who may not want to be there – who approach the class as a requirement to be survived rather than savoured.
Stimulating peer-to-peer learning and active engagement.
Participants are encouraged to enjoy lunch while we have this rather informal conversation.
