One of the primary missions of Yale-NUS College is to be an exemplar of excellent and innovative undergraduate education, led by teachers who offer some of the best teaching anywhere. Recognising the engagement and hard work of these teachers and sharing some of their experiences will help the entire Yale-NUS community appreciate teaching and improve student learning. The teachers will be recognised for their achievement with a Yale-NUS Distinguished Teacher award, a salary bonus, and an online profile on the Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL) website.
To be eligible for a teaching award, faculty members must have taught at Yale-NUS College for at least four (not necessarily consecutive) semesters. All ranks are eligible, including tenured, tenure-track, educator track, and visiting faculty.
- Distinguished Teaching Award – One senior awardee from amongst the pool of Associate and Full Professors (Tenured), Associate Professors (Educator Track), Associate Professors (Practice Track) and Senior Lecturers
- Early Career Teaching Award – One junior awardee from amongst the pool of Assistant Professors (Tenure-Track), Assistant Professors (Practice Track), Lecturers and Postdoctoral Fellows
Teaching Award Committee (TAC)
The first committee to select award winners will be composed of a student (chosen by Student Government and/or the Dean of Faculty), a faculty member, the Chair of the Teaching Learning and Advising (TLA) Committee, the Director of the Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL), and the Dean of Faculty who will chair the committee. In subsequent years, the committee will include the previous year’s awardees in addition to one student, one TLA representative who does not wish to be considered for the award in that year, one CTL representative, and the Dean of Faculty who will chair the committee. For continuity, the TLA and CTL representatives will be appointed for two overlapping years.
The committee will seek one junior and one senior award winners who demonstrate excellence in one or more of the following areas:
- outstanding teaching within and beyond the classroom
- patent ability to inspire and sustain the intellectual development of students
- creative, innovative, and engaging approaches to teaching
- contributions to curricular development
- effective mentoring of students (e.g., general and/or academic advising, supervision of capstone or other research, etc.)
Awardees will be chosen through a three-step process of nomination, short-listing, and final review.
Step 1: Nomination
The awards will be announced by the TLA committee and nominations will be solicited. Students, faculty, and administrators may make nominations; faculty may also self-nominate. The nomination process simply requires the nominator to provide the teaching award committee with the name of the person they are nominating. The Committee will inform nominees that they have been nominated and are invited to apply for an award, but they are not required to apply.
Step 2: Short-listing
The application process is meant to be lightweight for the applicants. All nominees who agree to be considered will provide the Committee with a list of at least two names of former students and two names of faculty members who can be solicited to write letters of support. A nominee’s students who provide letters should ideally be alumni, but they may be currently enrolled students as long as they are not in a position to be evaluated/graded by the nominee. The Committee will contact the first student and faculty member on the list to request letters; if the first-listed individuals are unable to provide letters then subsequent individuals will be contacted until one student and one faculty letter are obtained. Letter writers will be asked to describe ways in which the applicant creates effective learning environments and directly impacts the development and learning of students. Upon completion of the award process, these letters will be destroyed. The Committee will review the applications and compile a shortlist of applicants for final review. The number of applications chosen for final review will be determined by the Committee.
Step 3: Final Review
Shortlisted applicants will be asked to submit a teaching dossier for further consideration by the Committee. The teaching dossier should include evidence bearing on teaching quality such as what is submitted for an annual review, a third-year review, or promotion/tenure, i.e., evidence that demonstrates excellence in student learning in the Common Curriculum, excellence in supervising capstone projects, excellence in contributions to a given major, and excellence in experiential learning leadership. The Committee will evaluate the teaching dossiers to determine the two award recipients.
The Teaching Award Committee will determine the precise deadlines for nomination, submission of letters for nominees, and submission of teaching dossiers for short-listed applicants. The Yale-NUS award process will occur in Semester 1 of each academic year: applications will take place in October, evaluation will be completed by December, and the award will take place in January.
Recognition and Benefits to Awardees
A teacher who is designated as a Yale-NUS Distinguished Teacher will be recogniSed by the College publicly and will receive an additional salary bonus at the end of the year. The awardees will be announced at a full faculty meeting. A brief description of their teaching will be shared at the meeting and included in College publicity. CTL may arrange to photograph or film parts of a class, and share the profile of the awardees and the videos on the CTL website.
